Super Bowl 59 is in sight as the NFL’s best teams compete for a place in one of the biggest events in sports. Here is everything you need to know.Last year’s Super Bowl saw the Kansas City Chiefs win their third Lombardi Trophy in five years and the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since Tom Brady’s New England Patriots in 2004.
However, no team in history has managed to win the Super Bowl three seasons in a row or even make it back to the big game after two consecutive wins. Can the three time Super Bowl MVP and two time NFL MVP, Patrick Mahomes, create history this year?
The 2025 Super Bowl will be played at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday, February 9th. After making its debut in Las Vegas last year, the Super Bowl is returning to the familiar grounds of New Orleans, This marks the record-tying 11th time the city has hosted the Big Game.
The Superdome has held the Super Bowl seven previous times with the last time being in 2013, in what is now known as the ‘Blackout Bowl’ due to an unlikely power outage.
The Superdome has also been home to Tom Brady’s first Lombardi Trophy and Brett Favre’s only ever Super Bowl win. What team will add to the Superdome’s Super Bowl history?
Last year Usher performed the Halftime Show in Las Vegas, which broke the record for the most-watched Super Bowl Halftime Shows with 123.4 million viewers, previously held by Rihanna the year before with 121 million viewers. The Halftime show wasn’t always the global spectacle that it is now.
The Halftime show started as a modest affair, designed to simply entertain fans during the halftime break using University marching bands and drill teams.
The halftime show kept growing throughout the years, until 1993 where Michael Jackson took the stage and redefined the events history.
The success of this performance not only set the standard of how the Halftime shows are viewed but also started the era where half time became as anticipated as the game itself.
The spectacle that is held in the middle of America’s biggest sporting event keeps on growing with the biggest artists taking the biggest stage. This year Kendrick Lamar will take centre stage in New Orleans. This won’t be Lamar’s first Super Bowl appearance as 2022 Kendrick took the stage in 2022, performing alongside Dr. Dre.
The favourites to lift the Lombardi Trophy are the Kansas City Chiefs, which will complete the first ever ‘three-peat’ in NFL history.
Second favourite and most likely to meet the reigning champions are the Detroit Lions, who have not only never won a championship but never even been to a Super Bowl in their franchise history.
Amongst this year’s favourites are the Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills who also have never won a Super Bowl, although both have been four times each and both lost all four times.
But with the NFL playoffs being a straight knockout tournament means that anything can happen and anyone can make their way to New Orleans. Who will make Super Bowl LIX and who will lift the Lombardi Trophy?
