It is one the world’s biggest sporting event, and it has often provided incredible moments and unforgettable plays. The game where everything is on the line and the season comes down to the finest of margins, never disappoints to provide shocking and wonderful moments.
Here’s a look at some of our most memorable moments from recent Super Bowls.
Why Didn’t They Run the Ball – Super Bowl XLIX
The Patriots faced the defending champions Seattle Seahawks in Arizona. Bill Belichick and Tom Brady vs Russell Wilson and The Legion of Boom. The Seahawks were seeking to become the first to win two consecutive Super Bowls since the Patriots in 2004 and the Patriots were looking to end a 10-year championship drought.
The game was a thriller throughout, both defenses made big plays and both offenses managed their way to score vital points. The game was even and that’s how the first half ended 14-14. Katy Perry’s infamous half time show followed to break up the two halves. Then it was back to the action, in the third
quarter the Seahawks took a 10-point lead shutting Tom Brady out. But Brady was not out for long as in the last quarter he broke through scoring two touchdowns.
Down 28-24, it was Russell Wilson’s final chance to win another ring. Wilson threw the ball down field, it was tipped then deflected off Kearse’s leg, setting it up perfectly to catch it and get to the goal-line. 26 seconds were left on the clock, it was simple give it to arguably the best running back in the league Marshawn ‘Beast Mode’ Lynch and they win the game. They didn’t, it was a pass play.
Wilson stepped back and threw trying to find a receiver and was intercepted by Malcom Butler, the undrafted rookie. The Pats gained the ball and ran out the clock for their fourth Lombardi Trophy for the franchise.
The Impossible Helmet Catch – Super Bowl XLII
The 16-0 New England Patriots came up against the 10-6 New York Giants. The Pats became the first team to complete a perfect regular season since 1972 and hasn’t been done since. While the Giants were looking to become the first NFC wild card team to win a Super Bowl and end their seventeen-year drought. This game is widely regarded as one of the biggest upsets in American sports history.
The two sides met in the final game in the regular season, in which New England won a high scoring 38-35 game. The rematch in the Super Bowl however was not the same. A very tight game with both teams’ defenses dominating majority of the game. The game entered half-time 7-3 to the Patriots, with both teams struggling to score. The start of the second half was the same with a scoreless
third quarter, however Brady showed up in the fourth and put a 14-10 lead on the board.
It was the final drive of the game; the Giants had the ball on their own 17-yard line with 2:39 on the clock. They were struggling, it came to 3rd and 5 in their own territory, with seemingly nothing open Eli Manning avoids a sack and throws a prayer down the field to David Tyree who is covered by three defenders. Tyree climbed up above three players and got one hand on the ball trapping it against the top of his helmet and came down with it. Just four plays later Manning would throw the winning touchdown. David Tyree would never catch a ball for the Giants again but cemented his name as a legend.
