Biggest World Cup Upsets That Shocked the World

Fans watching sport live at Belushi's sports bar atmosphere.

Ah, the FIFA World Cup. A time when nations unite, grown adults paint their faces and everyone suddenly becomes a tactical genius. But amidst the glory and the goals lies something even juicier: the upsets. Those glorious, gut-punching moments when footballing giants are humbled by underdogs.

England vs USA (1950): The Original “It’s Not Coming Home”

We can almost picture it: 1950, Brazil. England, the self-proclaimed inventors of football, facing a team of American amateurs. What could possibly go wrong? Everything. The Yanks, featuring two postmen, a teacher and a dishwasher stunned England 1–0. The result was so unbelievable that British newspapers assumed it was a typo. ‘10–1 to England,’ they wrote. Nope. Just 1–0 to the US of A. Cheers, lads.

France vs Senegal (2002): From Champs to Chumps

At the 2002 FIFA World Cup, France strutted like they owned the tournament. Then, they came across Senegal, who were playing their first World Cup match. Chaos ensued. Papa Bouba Diop scored and the French champs were gone. For the rest of the world, it was a real treat.

Italy and Spain vs South Korea (2002)

In 2002, host nation South Korea decided to spice things up in the tournament. After beating the Italians, they pulled one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history, beating Spain. The Koreans ran further, fought harder, and made football’s elites look like they were stuck in slow motion.

Germany vs. South Korea (2018): The Champions’ Curse Strikes Again

Having recently hoisted the 2014 World Cup trophy, Germany was anticipated to win the 2018 Cup with ease. Until, Germany faced the South Korean squad that had already been eliminated; after all, South Korea had nothing to lose. The result was Korea’s unpredicted 2–0 victory and Germany going home early.

Argentina vs. Saudi Arabia (2022) — Messi’s Wake-Up Call

Lionel Messi was first to score, the Saudis were on the backfoot, and everyone was expecting a 6–0 scoreline. Messi had to be thinking, ‘This is going to be an easy game.’ But Saudi Arabia had other plans. They scored two sensational goals and achieved one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history. The Saudi Arabian squad had the world on its heels and the game was absolutely chaotic. Saudi Arabia defended with all their might against top-tier players, and Argentina’s loss was, to say the least, unexpected.

FIFA World Cup 2026: June 11 to July 19
